Madhya Pradesh Polls: Congress Leader Digvijaya Singh Urges ECI to Provide VVPAT Slips to Voters https://www.newsx.com/mp-digvijaya-singh-urges-eci-vvpat-slips-to-voters/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 08:48:52 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757691 Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh, has once again attracted attention ahead of the state assembly polls by urging the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) slips to voters. Singh took to social media to express his request, citing concerns about alleged tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the trial of these machines in the state.

“Respected Election Commission, we have a simple request: please hand over the VVPAT slips separately, which we will keep in a dedicated ballot box. Before the official count, let’s randomly select and tally the votes from 10 ballot boxes with the results from the counting unit. If the results match, then the declaration should be based on the counting unit’s results. What is the issue with this proposal? We urge the Supreme Court to take this matter seriously and safeguard democracy in our country,” Digvijaya Singh wrote ahead of Madhya Pradesh Elections.

In support of his claim, Singh shared a YouTube link indicating that during the EVM trial in Madhya Pradesh, only one political party’s VVPAT slip was received. Responding to Singh’s statement, Rajneesh Agarwal, the state secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticized the Congress Party, alleging that they tend to blame EVMs whenever they perform poorly in elections.

“Whenever the Congress is facing a significant loss in elections, they resort to blaming EVMs. Despite the rejection of these allegations by the Supreme Court and ECI, Digvijaya Singh continues to mislead the public and point fingers at EVMs for Congress’ defeats. The confidence in Congress has dwindled. Congress is already making efforts to make baseless accusations,” Agarwal stated.

He further asserted that the BJP is poised to secure victory in the upcoming assembly polls, aiming for more than 150 out of 230 seats in the state. Madhya Pradesh is scheduled to hold the assembly polls on November 17, with the vote counting set to take place on December 3.

Sanjay Chaudhary, a cyclist at Indian Gate, expressed his concern, stating, “The situation is not good at all. Pollution levels have been escalating in Delhi for the past 10-12 days. Today, the dense smog is particularly affecting our eyes. Despite carrying masks and bandanas, we are left with no choice but to confront it on the road.” Rahul Kundra, another cyclist, added, “We can currently sense the pollution as we cycle every day, but as it worsens, we’ll have to find an alternative.”

The air quality in the National Capital took a downturn from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ on Sunday afternoon, with an AQI of 302, as revealed by SAFAR-India. Prior to this, on Saturday, the quality of air had been categorized as ‘poor’, with an AQI of 266 on Sunday morning.

According to the latest data from SAFAR, the air quality around Delhi University at noon stood at 330 (very poor), while IGI Terminal T3 in New Delhi was at 313, compared to 276 on Sunday morning. Two US hostages released by Hamas amid conflict, IDF confirms https://www.newsx.com/two-us-hostages-released-by-hamas-amid-conflict-idf/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 07:13:21 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757628 In a recent development following the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the release of two US citizens previously held hostage by Hamas. The duo, identified as Judith Tai Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter, Natali Raanan, from Chicago, were reported to be in the hands of Israeli troops, as per The Times of Israel.

Expressing strong criticism, IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari condemned the Hamas terror group for persisting in holding approximately 200 other hostages. He emphasized, “Hamas presents itself to the world at this hour as one who releases hostages for humanitarian reasons, but in reality, we are talking about a murderous terror group, which at this hour is holding babies, children, women, and the elderly captive.”

According to CNN, the release of the two Americans occurred as part of negotiations involving Qatar and Hamas. The IDF spokesperson confirmed that the duo was handed over at the Gaza border and subsequently transferred to the Red Cross.

Acknowledging the efforts of Qatar, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed gratitude, stating, “I wanna thank the government of Qatar for their very important assistance.” He reassured the families of the hostages, “The entire United States government will work every minute of every day to secure their release to bring their loved ones home.”

The White House, in a statement released on Friday, confirmed the release of the Americans held by Hamas during the recent terrorist assault on Israel. “Our fellow citizens have endured a terrible ordeal these past 14 days, and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their family,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the IDF spokesperson emphasized that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining hostages, with preparations underway for the next stages of the conflict. “IDF is still preparing for the next stages of the fighting, which is expected to include a major ground offensive. The fighting is likely to last many more weeks,” Hagari added.

The delicate situation continues to evolve as international pressure mounts to ensure the safety and release of all hostages held by Hamas.

“Bringing 3 new laws which will change our criminal justice system”: Amit Shah at National Police Memorial https://www.newsx.com/laws-criminal-justice-system-shah-police-memorial/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 07:00:23 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757625 Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the Central government is set to introduce three new laws, marking a significant overhaul in the country’s criminal justice system. Shah participated in the Police Commemoration Day, where he paid tribute to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty at the National Police Memorial in the national capital.

In his address, Amit Shah underscored the pivotal role of the police in upholding both border and internal security, acknowledging the tremendous challenges faced by law enforcement officials. He lauded the selfless dedication of the police force, stating, “In any nation, border security or internal security is not possible without an alert police force. I have observed that police duty is the toughest among all the people serving the country. In any weather or festival, a policeman is always on duty to maintain law and order. Whether it is terrorism, crime, or managing large crowds, the police have consistently safeguarded the lives of the common people. The police of our nation has always proved itself on every front.”

Furthermore, the Union Home Minister shed light on the impending legislative changes, highlighting the government’s commitment to infuse the essence of Indianness into the new laws while ensuring the protection of every citizen’s rights in line with the principles of the Constitution. Shah emphasized, “The Government of India is bringing three new laws under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi which will change our criminal justice system. All three were built during the British period. Now, not only will Indianness be reflected in these laws, but the rights of every citizen will also be protected in the spirit of our Constitution.”

Elaborating on the country’s future trajectory, Shah shared the Prime Minister’s vision for the upcoming years, emphasizing the collective determination of 130 crore people to propel the nation to a prominent global position. He also acknowledged the substantial contributions of police personnel, citing a notable 65% reduction in terrorism, militancy, and Naxal attacks over the past year.

“Whether it is an area of leftist extremism, be it the North East states, be it Jammu and Kashmir, our soldiers have succeeded in keeping the situation normal at these three places,” Shah affirmed. He further emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, highlighted by the implementation of stringent laws and the establishment of the Police Technology Mission aimed at bolstering the country’s anti-terrorism capabilities.

The observation of ‘Police Commemoration Day’ holds profound significance, commemorating the sacrifices of ten courageous Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who lost their lives during a patrol duty ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops in Hot Springs, Ladakh, on October 21, 1959.

The National Police Memorial, featuring a Central Sculpture, the Wall of Valour, and an underground Museum, serves as a poignant tribute to the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of police martyrs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial to the nation on Police Commemoration Day, October 21, 2018, providing the Police Forces with a sense of national identity, pride, unity of purpose, common history, and shared destiny.

UK Disagrees with India’s Stance on Diplomatic Parity Over Departure of 41 Canadian Diplomats from India https://www.newsx.com/uk-disagrees-with-indias-stance-on-diplomatic-parity/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 06:33:31 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757620 Amid the recent India-Canada standoff leading to the departure of 41 Canadian diplomats from India, the United Kingdom has expressed its dissent with India’s actions. In a press statement issued on Friday, a spokesperson from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) emphasized the importance of dialogue and the presence of diplomats in their respective capitals for resolving disputes.

Disapproving of the decisions taken by the Indian government that prompted the departure of the Canadian diplomats, the FCDO underscored the significance of adhering to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The spokesperson stated, “Resolving differences requires communication and diplomats in respective capitals. We do not agree with the decisions taken by the Indian government that have resulted in a number of Canadian diplomats departing India.”

Furthermore, stressing the adherence to diplomatic norms, the statement highlighted, “We expect all states to uphold their obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The unilateral removal of the privileges and immunities that provide for the safety and security of diplomats is not consistent with the principles or the effective functioning of the Vienna Convention.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the US also raised concerns over the departure of the Canadian diplomats from India and urged the Indian government not to insist on reducing Canada’s diplomatic presence. During a press briefing on Friday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller remarked, “We are concerned by the departure of Canadian diplomats from India in response to the Indian government’s demand of Canada to significantly reduce its diplomatic presence in India.”

The US further urged India to cooperate with the ongoing Canadian investigation. Miller emphasized the expectation for India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, stating, “We expect India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including with respect to privileges and immunities enjoyed by accredited members of Canada’s diplomatic mission.”

Earlier this month, the Ministry of External Affairs in India called for a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats in India, citing alleged interference in India’s internal affairs. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi clarified in a press briefing on October 5, “Given the much higher presence of diplomats or diplomatic presence here… and their continued interference in our internal matters, we have sought parity in our respective diplomatic presence. Discussions are ongoing on the modalities of achieving this.”

However, the Ministry of External Affairs asserted that India had not violated any international norms in seeking parity in mutual diplomatic presence, stating, “We reject any attempt to portray the implementation of parity as a violation of international norms.”

Meanwhile, Canada accused India of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, leading to the removal of diplomats and their dependents from India. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly commented on Thursday, “We reject any attempt to portray the implementation of parity as a violation of international norms.”

Reacting to these developments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concerns over the Indian government’s decision to revoke the diplomatic immunity of 41 Canadian diplomats, emphasizing the adverse impact on the daily lives of people in both countries.

Trudeau stated during a televised press conference in Brampton, Ontario, “The Indian government is making it unbelievably difficult for life as usual to continue for millions of people in India and in Canada. And they’re doing it by contravening a very basic principle of diplomacy.” He further added, “It’s something that has me very concerned for the well-being and happiness of millions of Canadians who trace their origins to the Indian subcontinent.”

The strained relationship between India and Canada initially intensified after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleged in September that the Indian government was involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India firmly rejected these claims as baseless and motivated, while Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the allegation.

ISRO Overcomes Glitch, Conducts Successful Gaganyaan Test Flight Abort Mission https://www.newsx.com/isro-glitch-conducts-successful-gaganyaan-test/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 05:22:20 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757609 On Saturday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully executed the Test Flight Abort Mission for the Gaganyaan mission following the initial test flight’s cancellation at 8:45 am because of an engine ignition issue.

Earlier today, ISRO briefly suspended the launch of the first uncrewed test flight (TV-D1 Flight Test) in the Gaganyaan Mission. The space agency subsequently confirmed that the identified errors had been rectified, and the second launch was rescheduled for 10:00 Hrs today.

This Flight Test Vehicle Abort mission’s purpose is to showcase the efficiency of the Crew escape system within the Gaganyaan mission. The mission goals of the TV-D1 launch include demonstrating and evaluating Test Vehicle subsystems, demonstrating and evaluating the Crew Escape System with various separation systems, examining crew module characteristics, and demonstrating the deceleration system at higher altitudes and its recovery.

The Test Vehicle, a single-stage liquid rocket tailored for this abort mission, includes the Crew Module (CM) and Crew Escape Systems (CES) with their fast-acting solid motors, alongside CM fairing (CMF) and Interface Adapters. This flight simulated the abort condition during the ascent trajectory, corresponding to a Mach number of 1.2 encountered in the Gaganyaan mission.

This mission signifies a significant milestone in India’s endeavor to showcase the potential of sending humans into space. The Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate the capacity for human spaceflight by launching a crew of three individuals into a 400 km orbit for a 3-day mission and safely returning them to earth by landing in Indian waters.

This initiative will position India as the fourth country to initiate a manned spaceflight mission after the US, Russia, and China. Expanding on the achievements of Indian space initiatives, including the recent Chandrayan-3 and Aditya L1 missions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed India to set new and ambitious goals, including establishing the ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040.

Gaganyaan Abort Test Launch Rescheduled for 10 am Today https://www.newsx.com/gaganyaan-abort-test-launch-rescheduled-for-10-am-today/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 04:37:31 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757606 On Saturday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that the launch time for the initial uncrewed test flight (TV-D1 Flight Test) in the Gaganyaan Mission has been rescheduled for 10 am. Earlier today, ISRO halted the launch due to identified and rectified errors. According to ISRO’s post on the former social media platform X, “The reason for the launch delay has been identified and resolved. The launch is now scheduled for 10:00 Hrs today.”

The ISRO chief explained that the lift-off was hindered by engine ignition issues. “Today’s attempted lift-off was unsuccessful. The engine ignition did not occur as expected, and we are investigating the cause. The vehicle is secure, and we are working to diagnose the issue. We will rectify it and plan a new launch date soon,” the ISRO chief stated during a brief media interaction.

This Flight Test Vehicle Abort mission aims to showcase the effectiveness of the Crew escape system as part of the Gaganyaan mission and to verify the safe landing in the Bay of Bengal following the rocket launch.

The objectives of the Gaganyaan TV-D1 launch include demonstrating and evaluating Test Vehicle subsystems, evaluating the Crew Escape System with various separation systems, examining crew module characteristics, and demonstrating the deceleration system at higher altitudes and its recovery.

This mission marks a significant advancement in India’s endeavor to demonstrate its capability to send humans into space. The project’s aim is to demonstrate India’s capability to place humans in a 400-kilometer orbit and safely return them to earth with a splashdown in the Bay of Bengal Sea. About 20 major tests, including three uncrewed missions of the Human-Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), are planned to ensure the mission’s success.

The Gaganyaan project plans to exhibit human spaceflight capabilities by launching a crew of three into a 400 km orbit for a 3-day mission and returning them safely to earth by landing in Indian waters.

This program will position India as the fourth country to undertake a manned spaceflight mission, following the United States, Russia, and China. Building on the successes of Indian space initiatives, including the recent Chandrayan-3 and Aditya L1 missions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed India to strive for new and ambitious goals, including establishing the ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040.
