Hardik Pandya to Miss World Cup Match Against New Zealand Due to Injury https://www.newsx.com/hardik-pandya-to-miss-world-cup-match-against-new-zealand-due-to-injury/ Fri, 20 Oct 2023 07:50:52 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=757570 Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s World Cup journey hit a snag following an injury sustained during India’s 7-wicket triumph over Bangladesh on Thursday. Pandya injured his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling, raising concerns about his participation in upcoming matches.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) addressed the matter in a media advisory on Friday, stating, “Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. The all-rounder underwent scans and has been advised to rest.”

Consequently, Pandya will be under close observation by the BCCI Medical Team, leading him to miss the clash against New Zealand on Sunday in Dharamshala. However, the 30-year-old will join the Indian team in Lucknow ahead of their highly anticipated encounter against England on October 29.

Pandya’s injury occurred when attempting to halt a ball from reaching the boundary. He made an effort to use his right leg, leading to a slip and an ankle twist. Though he received immediate treatment and his ankle was taped, he appeared to be in discomfort and had to be escorted off the field after a brief practice run. Notably, star batter Virat Kohli assumed Pandya’s bowling responsibilities for the remainder of the over.

Opting to field first after winning the toss, India’s top-class spinners led by Sai Kishore wreaked havoc on the Bangladeshi batting lineup, dismantling their top order and leaving them struggling at 21/3 at the end of the powerplay.

Sai Kishore, Washington Sundar, and Tilak Varma were particularly destructive, reducing Bangladesh to 40/4 in ten overs, with Pavez Hossain Emon being the top scorer at that point with 23 runs off 32 balls. Despite a few contributions from Jaker Ali (24* in 29 balls) and Rakibul Hasan (14), Bangladesh could only manage to reach 96 runs in their allotted 20 overs, losing nine wickets in the process. Sai Kishore was the standout bowler for India, taking 3 wickets for 12 runs, while Washington Sundar also bowled well, picking up 2 wickets for 15 runs. Tilak Varma, Arshdeep Singh, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with a wicket each.

In the pursuit of the 97-run target, India lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal early, but captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma teamed up to quickly accumulate runs for India. They powered the team to 68/1 in just six overs. In the end, India comfortably achieved the target in 9.2 overs, with Gaikwad remaining unbeaten at 40* off 26 balls and Varma scoring an explosive 55* off 26 balls, featuring two fours and six sixes.

India’s victory was celebrated with enthusiasm, with SAI Media tweeting, “Unstoppable India! Our Men’s Cricket Team has emerged victorious against Bangladesh in the Semifinals, and enters the FINAL at the #AsianGames2022! #TeamIndia’s chase for glory continues, and we are rooting for the GOLD All eyes are on the ultimate showdown!”

Having secured their spot in the final, India awaits the outcome of the match between Afghanistan and Pakistan to determine their opponent in the gold medal match, which is scheduled for October 7.

Shubman Gill Battles Dengue, Likely to Miss Crucial World Cup Opener Against Australia https://www.newsx.com/shubman-gill-battles-dengue-likely-world-cup-opener/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 06:51:55 +0000 https://www.newsx.com/?p=756556 In a significant setback for the host team in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup, star Indian batsman Shubman Gill has fallen ill and is currently battling dengue fever, as per insider sources. There are indications that he may not be able to participate in India’s World Cup opener against Australia scheduled in Chennai on Sunday.

Should Shubman Gill indeed miss the opening match, it would be a substantial blow to India’s prospects of commencing the World Cup on a strong note. His absence could severely affect India’s chances, especially against the formidable Australian team.

In the 20 ODIs he has played this year, Shubman has amassed an impressive 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate slightly above 105. He has registered five centuries and five half-centuries in 2023, with his highest score being an outstanding 208.

It’s worth noting that the ICC Cricket World Cup commenced on Thursday, witnessing New Zealand’s dominant victory over defending champions England by a margin of nine wickets in Ahmedabad.
